Five reasons everyone loves laminate--and you will too!

Everyone, and especially home buyers, love the combination of visual appeal and function so any hard surface, including laminate flooring, will add value to a home.

It’s not at all like you might remember it from the 1970s. Modern technology, such as high definition photography, as well as features like texturing and micro beveling, makes it an incredible mimic of hardwood, tile, or stone. It is available in sheet, plank or tile formats.

Consider a high gloss laminate and you now have the elegant, high-end appearance of those gorgeous shiny wood floors, at a fraction of the cost.

American Rug opened its doors in 1905 and, since then, this family-owned company boasts one of the largest product inventories, as well as services like professional installation, in Hampden County, MA. For 11 consecutive years, we made Advocate’s “Best of the Valley” reward.

Our showroom is in Holyoke, MA, and we service the surrounding Springfield Metropolitan area.

Other reasons to love laminate

  1. Durability. This is a layered product, with the top one being a clear wear layer that protects the image, creates stain-and-scratch resistance, and offers the ability to withstand dents and fading. That’s all thanks to the clear coating of Aluminum Oxide on the wear layer, making it the superman of strength. The laminate core is usually made of tough fiberboard or particleboard; you might want to consider getting an underlayment. It provides cushioning that will make the hard surface a little less rigid and easier to stand on.
  2. Easy Maintenance. Just sweep, or vacuum every day. Run a damp mop over it from time to time. For a more thorough cleaning add a manufacturer-approved detergent or make your water-and-vinegar solution (one cup vinegar to one gallon of water). Be sure to wring the mop well so it’s only damp.
  3. Ease of installation: Laminate installation can be a DIY project. A floating installation which means it can go over almost any subfloor, it can either be glued down or the pieces can click and lock.
  4. Affordability. This cannot be emphasized enough; you can have the look of wood, tile, or stone at a budget-friendly cost. Beware the bargain-basement prices; if it’s inexpensive, something is sure to suffer, whether it’s quality or appearance.
  5. Eco-friendly. We don’t normally think of a man-made product as environmentally-friendly, but when you consider that much of it is made from wood--and that it can be recycled and reused--minds will change. Also, it doesn’t require harsh chemicals to clean, especially if you go for the water/vinegar solution. Remember, water can be harmful to laminate when it gets between the joists. It can also cause spotting, so always make sure your mop is just damp.
